At the beginning of my research, I was completely lost and did not know what to do. All I knew was Google and the Internet .I did not know have to look for other resources. Even if I did, I would not know how to distinguish between reliable resources and unreliable ones. When I first searched for books, I was not expecting to find much information because our topic is very recent. However, I was not disappointed when I went to the library. I found some interesting books. It is true that they are somehow general about the topic because they are not very detailed about the subject, but there are some interesting points on them that can make a good introduction for a research paper. After that, we moved on to journal articles. I was impressed by the large number of academic journals that the university's databases have. There were thousands of results for our topic. The thing I liked with jounals was that they were more up to date than books and they were also more detailed. Most of the time, they focus of a certain point. Therefore, they give you the maximum amount of information about that point. This way, when you combine several journal articles, you would find that you actually talked about different points in your research paper. Then I had to do research on the internet for websites and internet sources. This one was the most difficult for me because even though I found a lot of information and websites and the topic, the difficulty is to make sure they are reliable enough to be cited in my research paper. In order to do so, I had to first see which kind of website it was. According to the evaluating sheet sent by our professor : http://www.taftcollege.edu/newTC/Academic/INCO48/sec6-4.htm
Domain Type | What it Means |
---|---|
.com | a commercial business, organization, or company |
.edu | an educational institution |
.int | an international organization |
.gov | a nonmilitary government entity |
.mil | a military organization |
.net | other organizations: nonprofit, nonacademic |
.uk, .au, ca, jp, etc. | country codes denoting servers found in other countries |
Then I had to look for the "10 C's" which are the criteria for evaluating internet resources: content, credibility, critical thinking, copyright, citation, continuity, censorship, connectivity, comparability, context.
Finally, from all the sources I found, it seems that the answer to our thesis statement which is "does the lack of privacy in social networks increase stalking" is yes. Privacy policies in social networks still need to be strenghtened. There are so many people one does not know who can know things about him and his/her personal life, his/her political and religiours views, his/her hobbies, his/her education & job, etc. Therefore, one should be very aware and careful while posting and adding new information about oneself.
